Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease begins with gingivitis and, if left untreated, could progress to the more serious periodontitis.
During your new patient exam, our doctors and hygienists will screen for periodontal disease. If periodontal disease is found, we can often treat the condition right in our office. If more advanced treatment is necessary, we will refer you to a well-qualified specialist.
We use Arestin®, a topical antibiotic powder, to help fight minor gum infections. The powder stays in place for up to three weeks while it fights the bacteria causing the infection.
